As a part of the Windows team, we’re super excited about the Windows 10 Technical Preview that was just released! The final version of Windows 10 will ship with DirectX 12, and we think it's going to be awesome.

Software engineer here. This thread is action packed full of baby duck syndrome. Casuals complained incessantly about "not having a start menu on Windows 8", when there was a start menu the whole time. I was afraid Microsoft would add the start menu like the UI hacks available at the time, but they did it quite nicely. Still, there's no need for it.
I find Windows 8 efficient as hell. From a productivity stand point, it's quite awesome. I use Windows 8 for my development environment, test on VM's, and use whatever platform, mostly linux, for my production environment. It's the most efficient way to go.
Backend wise, It's the only operating system to offer two application life cycle environments. It's truly incredible and cross platform. Running apps in the "metro" environment go in a paused state for mobile, and run like services etc. The desktop offers the continuous running of applications.
