Even the most hardcore Ys fan isn't in it for the writing. It's generic and functional at best. What we are in for is the challenging gameplay and soundtracks.

Though, that said, there's something charming about how straight the Ys games play their fantasy and anime tropes. Ever since the late 90s, most narrative driven games have been desperately trying to push for some literary and cinematic recognition that often comes of as desperate and tryhard. It's somewhat refreshing to be able to return to a long standing franchise where the plots usually don't get more complicated than "Guy washes up on shore, has to defeat ancient evil awakens, guy who breaks through walls helps".

This might sound hella weeaboo, but you can't really complain about Japanese writing unless you can read Japanese. All you're reading is a butchered translated version that doesn't capture the nuances of Japanese.

You can say the same thing with an English game translated into Japanese. Therefore, English speakers get fuller experiences than Japanese-only speakers when it comes to games like Silent Hill and Deadly Premonition because they have English-only audio.

That is my main gripe with their writing.
I mean, apart from the often bad characterization. They seem to have the mentality that it's good to repeat stuff and forgo the the "show don't tell rule".

I do think people are a lot more forgiving about Japanese writing, or well, translations. But I often find their weird way of writing quite enchanting in a strange way.

You have to understand that Japanese people think and write differently than Americans, and other major English speaking countries. Their entire language approaches things in an entirely different manner than modern English, which often comes across as odd in translation.

It isn't like Romance languages, and there is generally a lot more focus on certain details and aspects which might not hold the save importance value to western readers.

In respect to these video games and a lot of anime, they are generally marketed and written for younger audiences. You really have to compare adult literature, comics, etc.

It might sound like a cop out, but a lot of "strange" sounding or silly sounding sentences, etc. make a lot more sense when you read it in the native language context. It is hard to describe, really, because you have to remove it from its context and translate it changes.
