Jurassic World was terrific!!

I just finished watching it and my emotions are still buzzing. I just have some quick comments though.

The dinosaur battle at the end was AMAZING!! It was better than Aliens vs Predator or Ripley vs the Queen in Aliens.

Hybrid vs the raptors and then the hybrid vs the T-rex who was joined by the last remaining raptor was amazing. And then the final kill blow from that water dinosaur!!

I found myself cheering on the T-rex with childlike glee.

Great writing. Perfect summer blockbuster. Perfect addition to the series.

What happened to the owls in Guardians of the Galaxy?

All along, I thought this was a film about owls. When it came out, I remember avoiding it because I thought it was a kid's owl movie. Were there owls in the previews?

In the movie, Afleck beats the crap out of Jessica Alba, and Jessica Alba just looks so much like my wife that it fucked me up watching it.

The Thing (1982) was pretty great

This was my first John Carpenter movie and I was afraid his style would be too cheap but it was actually okay and it worked very well. It was one of the few big sci-fi classics I hadn't seen.

Would you say some of his other movies are as good or is it downhill from here ? (I'm gonna watch the Escape movies and Halloween).

I think that's his high point but he has other really good films, mostly around the same time period, I'm not a fan of his output after the 80's. Halloween is probably his most famous film and some would say his best, it is a classic horror film.

Other films I would recommend - Big Trouble In Little China and Starman. Stay the hell away from Village of the Damned!

The last Carpenter film I enjoyed was Escape From L.A., but I'm a fan of his work overall. Definitely recommend Escape From New York, They Live, Halloween, In The Mouth of Madness, and Assault On Precinct 13.

why does AMC show such crappy films? they always seem to show crappy horror movies and sequels, yet the channel is called "American Movie Classics". Could it kill them to get the broadcast rights on films considered good?

Didn't you make this same thread on /tele/ about a week ago? The AMC acronym hasn't stood for American Movie Classics for over a decade. They shifted their brand away from showing classic movies to focus on their original TV shows, and they just show whatever for movies.

Arnold should have won an oscar for playing Mr Freeze, best performance I have ever seen.

Killer of Sheep (1978) Almost every critic heaped unqualified praise on this film when it was unearthed roughly 30 years after it was barely released as a UCLA film project in 1978. Unfortunately, this film in addition to being very slow and rambling, has a central flaw that most reviews never even bothered to address: The complete lack of any plot. This film is about as aimless and pointless as they come and its conclusion provides virtually nothing in terms of resolution.

I realize that there was a political incentive to give this film very high marks because it skillfully portrays the gritty, squalid conditions of inner city Los Angeles back in its day, but even the most realistic and vivid portrayals have to have an actual story at their heart or there is no point at all. The most honest review that I read about this film came from the least likely of sources: Janet Maslin of the New York Times, written perhaps before this film became so celebrated.

Which is better?

Scream vs The Godfather: both have a great ensemble cast, but only one is Hip and Witty, Scream is clearly the better movie folks.

Scream 2 vs The Godfather Part 2: Scream 2 is twice as Hip and Witty as the original, but The Godfather Part 2 isn't even witty or Hip. Plus only one movie has Cotton Weary, Scream 2 is therefore way better.

Scream 3 vs The Godfather Part 3: It really comes down to which movie features Cotton Weary and last time I checked he wasn't in TG3. Scream 3 is better.

Looks like Scream gets the shutout here.

Vivid and moody, Dolores Claiborne was a fascinating unlocking of a mystery switching from the dark and illuminating present to the blemished sunshine of the past. Judy Parfitt is spine-chilling as the magnanimous Vera Donovan.

Susan Hayward - A Really Fantastic Actress

Just watched I Want to Live! last night. It was phenomenal with excellent directing by the usually terrific Robert Wise and a staggeringly good performance by star Susan Hayward. I've previously seen her in a few films (Smash Up: Story of a Woman, The Lusty Men, and Demetrius and the Gladiators) and was also quite impressed, but I think she outdid herself here. Her performance was really captivating. She managed to make a character that was very strong, charismatic, and seemingly in control, but also with fragility and sincerity. Her performance never screamed victim despite her circumstances. Great film.

Anyone else seen anything with Hayward? What do you think?

He can't understand the difference between a smart movie, which is useful because contains morale, interesting informations, a role model, or anything else that can enrich an inquisitive mind. Also this retard can't understand why dumb movies are a waste of time, because do not contain anything useful for mind enrichment, but are a dull mix of audio and video sequences about nothing, like any soap opera is.

What pisses me off mainly are dumb blockbusters, when they spend huge amounts of money, but the writing is left on an oligophrenic level, where stuff blows up and people run and jump. If i think a movie's smart, that means i'm interested with the film. I just simply rewatch it again or several times. If i can't really comprehend the movie then it doesn't make sense (for me).

Well, I can rewatch almost all classic b&w movies. The point is that they all have classic writing, whith polished, clean from swearing dialogues, classic directing and theatrical acting, also the lightning is inviting because of black and white film. All this makes the experience of viewing mesmerizing.

to me movies are ultimately about getting some sort of decent enough emotional response from them which is at the core of entertainment.

What I really hate are movies which are designed to make dumb people think they're smart, but if you're actually smart you can see they're just dumb. Like Now You See Me, among many others...

No. A film like that is a rare, improbable case of everything coming together perfectly; we can assume that a large random change, like a different director, would not make things better.

Besides which, the Scorsese if the early 1970s would certainly have been all wrong for the project. Out would have gone all the courtly, old world atmosphere and values, and in would have come the relentless dull rage of Mean Streets.

Someone else has said he might have made a better go at Godfather Party III than Coppola. I highly doubt it, but at least we're in the right era now: by the 1990s Scorsese had reached the point where he would have been able to make a decent Godfather film.

Did you want to see it done on the big screen when you read it? I actually did, shame it can't happen now because HJO is much older and I don't think MNS would do a sequel now, too much has gone by. 10/10 and my favourite Horror movie bar none. Probably the creepiest score ever conceived.

The third one is one of the worst films I've ever seen in my life. It's basically like a Pink Panther movie.

i want to watch the second one, but i gotta watch it on the TV. I should buy the entire box set from HMV come Halloween time...

Quite scary with some really shocking scenes. The sequel was decent but the third one was a let down.

At all costs, avoid the 2006 remake!

A truly great horror film that does not rely on gore or a lot of violence and yet is compelling almost from the opening frame to the unforgettable final scene.

10/10 for me too, one of the greatest horror films ever. Peck's performance really solidified as one of my favorite, not only horror films of all time, but one of my favorite films of all time. The Omen series is solid, haven't seen the fourth but I thought the remake was good, probably John Moore's BEST film, his others have been REALLY disappointing.

umm why even ask.. the first is a near masterpiece of action cinema and the 2nd one is uniformly terrible with very poor action, anyone who says part 2 has either a bad memory or is wrong 😀😀😀

The first one is hard to beat as it has Seagal, Jones and Busey.

The second film has a lot of great character actors though like Eric Bogostian, Kurtwood Smith(Red Foreman Dumbass)Patrick Kilpatrick, Peter Greene, Everett McGill and Jonathan Banks
To me that just makes the movie worthwhile

I am really torn

Numero uno offers sturdier journeyman filmmaking from Andrew Davis and a great villain with TLJ rockin' the ex-hippie-biker look; I love the wicked knife fight between he and Seagal that ends with 'knife-through-skull/head through-radar-screen' double whammy kill. And while Erika Eleniak coming out of the birthday cake should earn the film an extra point, it in fact only makes up for one already docked via Gary Busey in drag.

Dark Territory is comparably whackier, with space lasers and shít—and Seagal outrunning a train collision. Come to think of it, the movie likewise works as an in-universe sequel to Broken Arrow. It suffers a bit from lame mid-90s CGI and Eric Bogosian maybe chews too much scenery, but it also has a teenage Katherine Heigl, which is kind of amazing.

A fast moving train or a slow boat to boredom?

under siege 2 is an action thriller that actually thrills - plus an entertaining megalomaniacal villain in Eric Bognosian. under siege is speed 2.

I like them about the same.

Back in the day, I hoped Seagal would return as Casey Ryback in a third installment, but his weight gain and indifferent attitude to appearing in C-grade action films squashed those hopes.

This. I haven't seen US2: Dark Territory in a long while though. Seagal, Jones & Busey were pretty awesome in the first one though.

Under Seige 2 by a fair margin.

First one does have Busey & TL Jones but the 2nd one gets better as it goes and the first one looses it's luster along the way.

In fact, as much as I love Busey and Tommy Lee, the villains are even better in Dark Territory.

Always great to see another fan of that underrated Walter Hill film! You might find this interesting; that's another Bruce Willis film which also had some (censorship, studio...?) cuts which shortened the movie from over its original two + hours long running time down to some 100 minutes.

Michael Keaton played Batman in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) and had signed on and even attended a costume fitting for Batman Forever (1995) but dropped out after Tim Burton stood down as Director.

So Val Kilmer played the role.

I personally think Batman Forever is an OK film not as good as the Keaton films but much better than Batman and Robin (1997)

I think as Batman, Val Kilmer wasn't as good as Michael Keaton but he was better than George Clooney and I prefer Kilmer to Christian Bale.

I don't see how Kilmer's career slumped later because in 1995 he was in Batman Forever (1995) and Heat (1995), two very big roles in big films.

This film really worked for me. Clever ideas and I liked the slight focus on music. Also contains some rather dark humor e.g "You drank Ian".

It's funny, well-made, and has the best original score of any film in the last 5 years, for my money.

It's also not without its flaws. The pseudoscience that oozes out of the script just when you were on board with this universe is unfortunate. You get a sense of who Jarmusch is as a person, and it isn't a great picture.

It's the ultimate hipster film, and, really, vampire hipsters make a lot of sense. I'm surprised we haven't gotten them before. Swinton and Hiddleston are great in it. It's an 8/10 for me.

They try to make you like the main character who did such a careless mistake that ended up killing his kids. I know he has huge regrets and tried killing himself, but I just can't help, but feel cheated that the movie tried to force me to like the character.

I want something good, psychological would be nice but a thriller with a decent monster is fine too. Bonus points for zombies.
