What NASA really said about Antarctic ice

1 Name: Anonymous : 2015-11-09 00:00
Sea ice surrounding Antarctica reached a new record high extent this year, covering more of the southern oceans than it has since scientists began a long-term satellite record to map sea ice extent in the late 1970s. The upward trend in the Antarctic, however, is only about a third of the magnitude of the rapid loss of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean.

So sorry, kids. Global warming is happening--this is just part of the process. Don't listen to people with crackpot agendas (that don't even make sense on a purely capitalistic basis). We can cut back on our carbon emissions or we can die in huge numbers, and please note--you're scared of Muslims, righties? What do you think is going to happen when they start pouring out of the increasingly unlivable Middle East in numbers dwarfing what we're seeing now?

What happens when whole populations are displaced by rising sea levels?

You think they're just going to say "Well gee, we had a good run, we better just lie down and die now"?

No, they're going to think "Those bastards in the developed world did this, and we're going to march over there and take what we need to survive."

Just like you'd do, if the tables were turned.

Last year.

This year, they say this:

Which is great, except it doesn't prove a thing. There is still a huge overall loss of polar ice. Because we have two polar regions. You just want to focus on the one that is temporarily giving you an excuse to deny the obvious.

Not one NASA scientist would back you up, but you'll selectively quote them anyway.

Global warming has been very consistent--globally. Locally, we see fluctuations and those were PREDICTED. Nobody expected every single part of the planet would warm at the same predictable rate. Because this is an interactive system. That we are wrecking.

Of course it proves something, you ninny. It proves that the Antarctic ice sheet is gaining mass, not losing it, as previously stated by NASA. They've reversed themselves. Learn to read! The only ice loss in the Arctic was sea ice , which doesn't affect sea levels. It has been gradually regaining the loss over the past several years.

Global warming has been very consistent--globally. Locally, we see fluctuations and those were PREDICTED. Nobody expected every single part of the planet would warm at the same predictable rate. Because this is an interactive system. That we are wrecking.

More nonsense you've picked up somewhere. Nothing could be further from the truth. You're just making schit up now. You need to shut the fnck up and go away ... NOW, kid. Nothing you've said bears any resemblance to known science ... from anyone.

Which is great
I agree. Excellent news.

There is still a huge overall loss of polar ice.
Which doesn't affect sea-levels - and the 'loss' isn't actually at its worst, as arctic sea ice has been at reasonable levels for a few years now. Furthermore, this has zero affect on sea levels anyway.

You just want to focus on the one that is temporarily giving you an excuse to deny the obvious
As the vast majority of ice that could potentially affect sea levels is located in the Antarctic ice-sheet, The news that this sheet is NOT contributing to the oceans levels is most definitely worthy of focus.

Not one NASA scientist would back you up, but you'll selectively quote them anyway.
Uhm, they just did 'back me up'. Emphatically:

Global warming has been very consistent--globally.
I agree. Consistently flat for 18 years.

Locally, we see fluctuations and those were PREDICTED.
Nobody predicted the record cold Australia experienced last Winter, or the full, brimming dams.

Nobody expected every single part of the planet would warm at the same predictable rate.
Actually, over 95% of climate scientists did.

And they were wrong.

Because this is an interactive system.
Yes.

That we are wrecking.
Despite there being almost zero real-world date evidence to substantiate this.

Little wonder you retreated from this discussion, given your comprehensive defeat.

You did realize that losses in sea ice has no bearing on sea levels, don't you? The thing is by comparison the Arctic ice cap doesn't even come close to the Antarctic in volume. The Antarctic has 90% of the world's ice and it's growing in mass.

So sorry, kids. Global warming is happening--this is just part of the process. Don't listen to people with crackpot agendas (that don't even make sense on a purely capitalistic basis).

D'you mean like NASA? You couldn't find anyone more crackpot than James Hansen, its last director.

We can cut back on our carbon emissions or we can die in huge numbers, and please note--you're scared of Muslims, righties? What do you think is going to happen when they start pouring out of the increasingly unlivable Middle East in numbers dwarfing what we're seeing now?

People who say "carbon emissions" instead of CO2 or carbon dioxide emissions generally haven't a clue of the difference. Such people shouldn't be commenting on this subject at this juncture.

What happens when whole populations are displaced by rising sea levels?

I'd imagine the same thing humans have always done under such conditions ... adapt. During the human evolution on Earth, sea levels have nearly always been on the rise (at least for the past 12,000). The thing is, sea levels are not rising out of the ordinary. Learn your history.

You think they're just going to say "Well gee, we had a good run, we better just lie down and die now"?

Now you're just getting silly. When have humans ever done that?

No, they're going to think "Those bastards in the developed world did this, and we're going to march over there and take what we need to survive."

Just like you'd do, if the tables were turned.

Dear gawd ... you contemporary youngsters certainly weren't well equipped in the creative writing skills, where you? Unless you really do believe that load of malarkey ... then you weren't equipped with much in the way of active brain cells. No one is going to think any such thing unless some ignorant moron tells them such a silly story.

So you mean to say that the highly selective evidence of local cooling each winter doesn't disprove global warming? What are you going to say next? That daily tides aren't proof that ocean levels are falling rapidly? Really now!

Climate migrants are already occurring and, as you say, it is only going to get worse. About the Middle East specifically, some may find this instructive:

http://aytzim.org/resources/educational-materials/45-climate-change

"
Mean temperature increase of between 1.6° and 1.8° C.
Reduction in precipitation between 4 and 8 percent; increased rain intensity; and changes in rainfall patterns.
Increase in evapotranspiration by nearly 10 percent.
Greater seasonal temperature variability.
More severe weather events, such as droughts and floods.
Mediterranean biomes expected to shift 300 to 500 km northward; if a 1.5º C warming were to occur, which could mean that Mediterranean ecosystems in Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan would become more desert-like.
Some models predict as much as a 50 percent reduction in mean annual precipitation in the Jordan River Basin"

Also the denialists face the problem of how to explain why the ice sheet is to grow since they of course also claim that temperatures are not increasing. So by arguing for an increased ice sheet they, perhaps unbeknown to themselves, actually admit that global warming is real. This is why I think most climate denialists are somehow intellectually or logically challanged individuals.

The general trend shows that a warming climate in the southern hemisphere would transport more moisture to Antarctica, causing the interior ice sheets to grow, while calving events along the coast will increase, causing these areas to shrink. A 2006 paper derived from satellite data, measures changes in the gravity of the ice mass, suggests that the total amount of ice in Antarctica has begun decreasing in the past few years.

I think all logicians agree that A and not-A cannot be at the same time. In other words you cannot have a world where the Earth is warming and not warming at the same time. Even in terms of modality I think it is unthinkable that you could have a hypothetical parallel world where it would be possible for the Earth to warm and not-warm at the same time.

I also don't understand why they think it's only the geographical spread and not changes in mass that are important.

you guys are funny, you are the same idiots that told everyone in the 70s that we were heading for another ice age, likely to die as sheets of ice cover the planet. the 80s and 90s (and apparently you picked it up again), we are going to go out in a ball of flame... then, when it became obvious that the temperature wasn't going there, we re-name it "climate change". i suppose it is anything to remain "in the right". ego will be your downfall.

1. It happens no matter what we do - Obama standing on a receding glacier means - glacier advance and recede like they have been doing for a long long time. The system is too complex for models already set to prove global whatever to predict.

2. Almost if not all of the dire, catastrophic predictions that global cooling/warming/climate change "scientists" have offered have not happened, the reverse has happened or are just plain wrong. My favorite was after Katrina the "scientific" community yammered about how the next year was going to worse and we better pass restrictive socialism NOW! NOW BY GOODNESS! How many hurricanes hit?

This planet used to have one continent
This planet has gone through some serious changes - some quickly, some not so quick
This planet is constantly changing
We must stop Plate Tectonics
Pangea broke up because of "eevvvaaaaalllll oil republicans!"
