what caught my eye on this story was that the way the rules are applied isn't anything like I was told they would be. I can see other cellular carriers not liking this but we were always told that without net neutrality we'd see large companies PUNISHING consumers. In this case they are rewarding them and got into trouble for it

Net Neutrality is a euphemism much like liberal "equality". Everyone will be equally poor.

and I'm surprised so few people have bothered to even read about this. There was vigorous debate/discussion on here about net neutrality and this is one of the first major things to come from the rules

At this point that would probably be the entirety of the discussion. On one hand you'd have those who would simply deny and play apologist for what is blatantly the case, that the stated intent on which we were sold this bill of goods was hogwash and that the power is being abused, and on the other hand you'd have guys like me saying I told you so.

The damage is done. We now have a regulatory bureaucracy with powers that they shouldn't have, and they're not likely to lose them anytime soon.

I think it's working exactly as it should. We passed anti-trust laws to stop railroads from giving themselves unfair advantages, too.

In the context of giving their own data the fast lane, they are indeed hurting their competitors. Limited bandwidth means if DirecTV's content gets priority, the data of their competitors moves more slowly. Netflix and Hulu hickups become more prevalent, and some will drop their Netflix and Hulu subscriptions for AT&T subsidiary DirecTV as a result.

In the end, this NATURALLY becomes about fast laning as there is a finite amount of bandwidth.

If your own content gets a zero rating, then you gain a competitive advantage. Customers who are in the market for just one streaming service will factor into their decision that DirecTV has a zero rating while Netflix does not.

Here's where fast laning comes in naturally. This is about data transmission period.
Not just Netflix; but any other form of data available from 4ct's board to College websites to porn websites. With all data capped, everyone's data has an even shot at gaining some of the bandwidth. Then you add in zero rating for DirecTV. More consumers will begin to use it as it has gained an added value. In essence, consumers of DirecTV are getting a rebate where none existed prior. The result is that DirecTV eats up more of that finite bandwidth, meaning there is less available for other content. Everything else is in effect throttled.

People have no clue what this paradigm means in the long run.

Again, this isn't taking anything away from anyone. You must hate that some people pay extra for Amazon prime and get faster shipping
