I am looking for a complete prat's guide to computing and any advice would be appreciated. I usually bribe the grandchildren, but even they are getting sick of me.

My current problem is this.

If I go to this site..

and click on Download to spread sheet, then two things happen.

If I have Excel then all the data ends up on a spreadsheet, which is all fine and large.

But if I don't have Excel but Open Office, all the bumph appears on Notepad and is unreadable.

So, first question, why does the download end up Notepad?

And two, how do I get the data out of Notepad and onto an Open Office spreadsheet?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

The answer to your question is that the "spreadsheet" is in a .csv (Comma Separated Values) format. On a computer with Excel installed, this file extension is associated with Excel. On a computer without Excel installed, the default application seems to be Notepad.

To change the association to Open Office you can to go to:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations

Then set the .csv extension to be associated with the spreadsheet application of Open Office. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I'm not an Open Office user.
