Epic Privacy Browser is a good Chrome alternative. Built on Chromium (which is the open source browser Google then adds their branding and services to in order to make it Chrome) but with numerous security features.

there is a happy medium, the 64bit version of firefox, Waterfox. it has some minor bugs and I won't say it is the perfect browser but so far I like it better than the other two. never crashes even when I have 500+ tabs open.

also like the other people said noscript can go a long way if you are savy enough to use it to its full potential.

for chrome i dunno, "Adblock Plus" still works with the current version of Waterfox

+ Use a VPN that is not based in US, Canada, UK, Australia, France, Germany. (Switzerland is preferred)

+ Bleachbit or Privazer for cleaning traces

+ Tor browser & Wickr messenger for anything you would not want to disclose (Read tutorials, do not be foolish)

+ Comodo Dragon (built on Chromium) and Ice Dragon (built on Firefox) are two regular browsers with privacy features*

Remember to check settings in all programs (unless in case of security based programs when advised not to for safety/stability)

*Some of these security centered browsers use an older than current version of either Chromium or Firefox so that it's not unreliable. Check reviews and discussion if you need clarification.
