He said he would. Well he didn't just say he would, he said he "absolutely" would.

He has over 500 businesses where he is owner or part owner. The return is over 1,000 pages long. With it being so huge his detractors could pick one page a day as an example of wronging, whether he did anything wrong or not, and then Trump would be forced to spend most of the next four years defending it all.

It's not worth it. Better to take the one time hit for not releasing it at all.

With a tax return numbering in the thousands of pages, why would you put that much information out there that could be taken out of context with the whole return, and criticized by each number and letter, regardless of the IRS saying it is a legal return?

Each and every super-rich tax filer does the same thing, except those people are not the President.

He'd be crazy to release his tax returns to a hostile public and press. I sure would not do it.

Why did he say he would "absolutely" release them then?
Why did he say he would if he were not under audit?

So since he knew this going into the race, why did he even promise to release the returns in the first place?

1) he did something illegal or borderline illegal.
2) he's making much less than he says he does.

My guess is both are true.

I saw recently that when he was roasted on Comedy Central, the ONLY joke that was off limits was any suggesting he's not as wealthy as he says.

NOT ALLOWED: Any joke that suggests Trump is not actually as wealthy as he claims to be
