Feminism is based on the idea that men and woman should be treated as equals before the law. Not that they are literal equals, but rather that sexism is a piss-poor excuse for denying women the same rights and privileges that men enjoy. Feminism is pretty much the movement of "sexism sucks".

There's a lot more feminists than there are people who call themselves feminists. Most people you pass on the street on a daily basis are feminists. Not because they chant slogans or go to protests, but because they don't see the logic in treating women like crap. That's all that's required.

Women have been treated equally before the law for a long time now (in fact, they're often prioritized over men in the law, especially with regards to criminal sentencing and family court outcomes). Modern feminists now want equality of outcome which is why feminism is now bullshit, and some people prefer not to associate with the term.

A person out on the street who believes in everyone being treated equally before the law isn't a "feminist", they're just a person who believes that everyone should be treated equally before the law. This applies to all people, so a term like "feminism" ought not really be levied on it anyway since there's nothing inherently "feminine"-exclusive about this notion. Originally feminism arose specifically to acquire these equal rights for women, so back then the title would have been more applicable and less full of shit.
