Idris Elba - we have to talk

Now that it appears Daniel Craig really has waved goodbye (or my likely said 'fuck off' given Craig's recent attitude) to the Bond franchise that has financially enriched him, Elba's inevitably back in the frame to play the iconic spy.....and the Doctor out of Doctor Who, and Bruce Wayne, and Oskar Schindler - that last one if there's ever a remake or sequel to Schindler's List of course, etc, etc !

It would of course be a commercially brave, nay unprecedented move that typically pale, middle-class, Guardian reading, definitely not waycist, virtue signalling, likely Bond hating (coz he's a nasty misogynist, etc, etc) wankers assure us will be 'soooooooo cool' for the franchise.

But how viable is Elba - the current go to black British actor for the above described 'progressive' tossers to arse lick and/or pretend they fancy of course, as Bond? I mean really?

After all as a black secret agent/super spy he couldn't realistically blend into his surroundings in the likes of Russia, Eastern Europe et al so there could surely be no story setting in those regions for a start. Also, by the time Elba hypothetically took over the role he wouldn't be all that far off fifty either.

I don't doubt that Elba's a good actor but the endless, often patronising/excessive accolades he receives and the breadth of roles he can apparently do (not least because he's likely the only Black British actor right-on tw@ts can actually remember the name of easily - especially with his other main rival debatably being Chitty Eifeltower, er no, Chartwell Eyesore, erm, oh whatever his bloody name is!) remains speculative.

Lastly, despite being a heterosexual chap, my 'Gaydar' is having a bit of trouble picking up on Elba's much vaunted raw sex appeal tbh. Visually Craig may have been an unconventional Bond considering his predecessors, but he still crucially boasted 'sexiness'. I really can't see it with Elba and I'm not entirely convinced of those that purportedly do tbh.....

^Cue the inevitable responses akin to 'so you don't think that black people should ever be actors then?' in 5,4,3,2,.....

So you don't think that black people should ever be actors then?

Absolutely not. They are ruthless bedevil'ers as a creed and practice necromancy when no one's looking. Everyone knows that.

I wish I gave a shite about James Bond. I've never seen one of those movies.

Idris Elba is getting tiresome with his activism but he's still a sexy guy and they could have him do a spy mission in Africa, couldn't they?

Ah, who cares?

Evidently not you!

Thanks for coming.

I mean about James Bond movies. I think it's an interesting topic.

I'm looking forward to anon next OP, entitled "The art of brevity".

His race has nothing to do with why he shouldn't play Bond. He complained about the couple minutes of action scenes he had in Thor 2. How is he supposed to handle an action franchise?

I think he should white up for the part. Worked in "White Chicks" didn't it?

His race has nothing to do with why he shouldn't play Bond

On the contrary it plays a significant factor - especially if one is a Bond purest (I'm not) who legitimately believes Bond's long established origins, mythology, ancestry et al are, and should remain, largely inflexible (at least with regards to ethnicity).

Besides, if it wasn't a big deal then those of a certain ideology and mindset wouldn't be squeeing so hard over the mere prospect of a non-white Bond now would they.....

I don't really care about Bond's ancestry. I'm only in it for the Aston Martins and cheesy villains.

Changing characters' races never bothered me. I won't care if Bond is made black, just like I didn't care when The Last Airbender kids were made white. Why some people make a big deal about it, I'll never know.

I don't really care about Bond's ancestry.

Oh well quite a few do....

Changing characters' races never bothered me. I won't care if Bond is made black

But how would/could he feasibly be portrayed as a scene-blending spy in aforementioned Russia and/or Eastern Europe though? It's surely a cop out to say 'just don't film there'!

Also, Bond's established origins/heritage would surely require a substantial overhaul for a non-white character.....arguably to such an extent that one could be forgiven for regarding a new 'efnik' Bond as essentially a completely different character. In which case why not do what the likes of Stan Lee recommend and create engaging, original 'minority' secret agents, super heroes et al rather than lazily appropriate long established (and exclusively white) characters - usually for highly specious reasons?

That would be the smartest thing to do. Everybody would be happy. The only reason that isn't done more often is that Hollywood wants to keep the "brand" name because they're afraid original characters won't be box office draws.

The name's Bond.

D'Shawndré Bond.

I have no real interest in Bond...I hope though Idris does not get the role.

Better he gets the more prestigious role of the Doctor.

Easily one of the best actors of our time.

If the next incarnation of Doctor Who is played by an androgynous Australian aboriginal midget, I couldn't care less - the character of Doctor Who is of such a nature that it would fit with any representation you can think of. Not so James Bond; Bond is a heterosexual male of British extraction, attractive, physically fit and of a certain age - not too young and not too old.

It is no more racist to say that Bond can't be played by a black actor than it is to say that the character can't be played by the Japanese Sumo champion, or by Dawn French.
