A Polish man died in just 31 seconds after he was the victim of a “chilling” act of random violence in a street in Birmingham, a court heard.

Lukasz Furmanek, 24, and his friend Radoslaw Dudek crossed the path of their “pumped-up” knife-wielding attackers moments before they were stabbed, it was claimed.

Both victims suffered multiple stab wounds.

Mr Furmanek died from his injuries, while Mr Dudek was left clinging to life and was only saved by “heroic” medical efforts.

Abdullah Atiqzoy, 18, and a 16-year-old had both tried to flee the country after the attack, Birmingham Crown Court was told.

A vulnerable Latvian woman was trafficked into Birmingham, forced into a sham marriage and kept as a prisoner for 14 months before finally being rescued.

The 36-year-old victim thought she would be able to earn money for her family when she was flown from Riga to Luton Airport by a gang in July 2013.

But the work never materialised and the gang took her passport.

The victim, who had learning difficulties, spent the next 14 months being kept as a virtual prisoner, including in Birmingham, Slough and Longsight in Manchester.

Even though she spoke no English and had little understanding of the ceremony, she was ‘married’ to Pakistani national Mohammed Akmal who hoped his bogus relationship would persuade the Home Office to allow him to stay.

Akmal’s Islamic marriage ceremony was witnessed by Longsight takeaway owner Rashid Ahmed, who signed the ‘marriage’ documentation.

The bogus couple lived for a while in Birmingham before the victim was moved again, this time to a tiny locked attic in Longsight where Akmal’s family lived.

The victim was only allowed to make phone calls home to her mother when supervised.
