The nuclear deterrent is not next to a huge city its at a secure nuclear sub base in the Highlands. Yes its massively expensive but there are much more efficient nuclear weapon types nowadays at just 25% of the cost. The money saved would be better spent on the roads,healthcare, education and the military.

The oil isn't yours considering all the investment England put into it. Either way there's not much left and the revenues are falling year on year. If you rely on the oil you're in trouble. Unless you can stump up huge funds to drill much deeper for a small chance at deep rich reserves.
