When I visited Chicago this summer the guy at the hotel I stayed @ pulled out a tourist map of the city and drew circles around 2 distinct areas of the south and west sides.

He said "avoid these 2 areas, and you'll be just fine."

And I was. The area I was at near the fountain was extremely beautiful and full of families and tourists....

My impression of Chicago and that area were like night and day....

Still I wouldn't live there....

What's ironic is that the guy was some kind of tourist official -- and a Democrat. He told me he used to work in the same building with Obama, when Obama was some kind of local official. Interesting story the dude had. I thought it funny though he was telling me to avoid the exact areas where most Democrats cite as strongholds -- I'll give you that.

Then again Illinois is a very unique Democrat state -- and on the verge of bankruptcy because of the massive pension burdens of its public employees.

Really? It's ironic that the person advising tourists in a hotel points out dangerous areas on the outskirts of the city? And I would hardly paint these areas as Democratic strongholds. They're focuses on the more affluent areas where people are more likely to vote.

It's pretty sad what some people who don't live here think of a city of millions of people. They act like it's some war torn gangland where we all live in fear of being shot at any moment. I guess you can't blame them with all the news about shootings in Chicago. But unless you live in these areas, you really have to go out of your way to find that activity. The other 99.9% of us go about our daily lives with no problems involving gangs.

If I lived on the south or southwest side then I just might think it was a war-torn gangland.

And yes, the south and southwest side are traditionally Democratic strongholds.

Those areas have sent many a Democratic alderman to Federal prison for corruption.
