A H bomb is a multi-stage nuke that has fission and fusion reactions based on the Teller-Ulam design.

What North Korea most likely has, along with Israel and India, is a fusion boosted fission bomb.

Hydrogen bombs are the nukes that get up to the megaton level (equivalent to 1000 kilotonnes of TNT). This bomb by North Korea was 6-7 kilotonnes equivalent of TNT, or 0.06-0.07 megatons. It is still barely 1/3 of the power of the Hiroshima bomb and more or less exactly 1/3 of the power of the Nagasaki bomb.

The disturbing thing about this detonation is that the bomb was smaller and North Korea is getting closer to being able to put these warheads on missiles.

One other thing is that North Korea has a confirmed plutonium reprocessing plant to extract the isotope Pu-239 from spent nuclear waste from nuclear reactors. Plutonium does not exist naturally. Without plutonium you cannot make a hydrogen bomb. If all you have is Uranium 235 as your fissile material, like Iran, you're going to be severely limited in the yields of the nukes you make. The Hiroshima bomb was around 60kgs of 80% enriched uranium (80% of the uranium was the uranium isotope U235). The Nagasaki nuke used around 6kgs of plutonium 239 for a larger yield.

Only 5 countries have ever tested a true hydrogen bomb. USA, Soviet Union, UK, China and France. I'm not even sure if the UK and France have any hydrogen bombs in its arsenal anymore.

No other country has got close to a true thermonuclear weapon or will get close. Not Israel, not India, not Pakistan and definitely not North Korea. Ever. A true megaton hydrogen bomb is just too complex to build and test.

I think the biggest nuclear detonation for France was 2.6 Mt (megaton), UK 3Mt. China is 4 Mt. USA has detonated a 15Mt nuke and once had nukes as powerful as 25Mt in its arsenal. Currently the biggest nuke in the USA arsenal is the B83 nuke which is 1.2Mt. I don't know what Russia's current largest nuke is.

The largest nuke ever was the Tsar bomb which was equal to 58 megatons of TNT.

So compare this 6-7 of kilotonne of TNT nuke of North Korea's to the Tsar bomb's 58,000 kilotonnes of TNT or the 25,000 kilotonnes of TNT of the B41 bomb which is the largest ever built by the USA or the 1200 kilotonnes of the B83 which is the largest nuke the USA has today.

North Korea lacks a reliable delivery system. They're not crazy enough to actually use a nuke. They know that they would be utterly destroyed if they did. If Lil' Kim ordered a nuke be used in hostility towards anyone, the military would likely stage a coup.
