I was thinking about learning Latin. Is it worth it? I think it's a cool language and I want to read ancient novels in their original language.

If you already know a couple of languages that are practical, sure. If you don't know any, just know that the only use you will get from it is reading the ancient text and not communicating with people.

This depends on your intentions and how much you value reading the original scripts.

Learning Latin vocabulary for SATs and romance language understanding is one thing, but learning translation (declensions, parts, conjugations, terminations etc) is a whole different beast and is far, far harder.

Latin fundamentally functions very differently than what we're used to, so if you're gonna try and learn it well enough to translate, you'll just have to be ready to actually try. A lot. It's not as simple as learning vocab. Translation and is a whole different skill/set of knowledge.

Anyway, so I'd say go for it. If it ends up not being worth it, oh no, you've spent time rounding out your pool of knowledge and are better off for it. If it turns out you like it, great! The pursuit of knowledge is always a valuable one, no matter how short or long term.

Yes, Latin has a great corpus of literature. Learn Latin and you'll have access to about 1/4 of the classical world. It's not useless at all.

Latin is not meant to be spoken with people. You don't learn Latin to have conversations with your buddy, you learn it either to read historical texts or because you want to become a Lvl. 2 Catholic. I just don't understand why people argue "you won't be able to speak to people."

I like your last point, though. Sure, studying Latin won't help you communicate with Spanish and Italian speakers, but at least I was able to understand what you were saying without ever having taken Spanish. The inflections and lexicon are very identical. In that regard, OP, Latin is a great gateway to other languages.
