Do digital copies count?
Any specific consoles you collect for?

Most of my games were picked up over my lifetime for the purpose of wanting to play them or they were cheap.

I'm not sure i would consider myself a collector but i never sell games even if i have duplicate copies but that probably just makes me a hoarder.

But i have gone out of my way (and wallet) to find specific games. I spent over $100 finding all 3 Forbidden Siren games. I'm even trying to look for a better condition copy of the second one (the one i have was the rental copy that made me aware of the series)I would even buy a PS4 if a new Siren game was announced.

If i were to collect for anything it would probably be the PS2 which i now consider the last good generation at least in terms of 1st and 3rd party games.

As for digital copies i don't feel games that are released with both physical and digital options will have that much worth for future collectors, as, by then you would probably be able to play them on your phone.

I should have though.. I used to own some games worth a ton of money of now for all these *beep* hipster collectors.

I've accumulated enough over time that I would say so.

I actually think I have more respect for gaming (and games, consoles, etc themselves) that many if not most collectors.

For example, in my youth I made a decision I regret to this day, which was to trade in my Super Nintendo along with like 40 great games (seriously, all the big ones) and several peripherals -- all toward one or two newer games I basically got tired of in a month. Tragic stuff, that. I think many can relate.

However, I'm respecting that choice for what it was, and have accepted that I no longer have a Super Nintendo, and haven't in a long time. That's okay. It would be neat to still have it, but at least I have the memories. I didn't trade those in.

Some people aren't good at accepting that, and have this sort of tacky, misplaced obsession with acquiring any Super Nintendo to fill the hole on their shelf (or more perceptively, in their heart) -- never mind if it's somebody else's Super Nintendo that has memories for that person, who for whatever reason (maybe even one they'll regret soon) is selling it on eBay or at some flea market or boot sale.

When the collector sees it, he's like "Gimme, I want that!" and snatches it opportunistically, like some cheap stand-in for what he originally treasured, and this imposter console with its unfamiliar dust and signs of wear, it's supposed to, what, undo what was done long ago?

No, I reject that. I wouldn't be able to nestle it alongside my other gaming items, the ones I bought new and have enjoyed without other fingerprints being all over them, and look at it the same way. I would rather have a collection of one game that is truly mine than one thousand games I have pilfered and purloined from the lives of others.

No, especially not for Nintendo consoles.

At this point it's far too easy to just buy everything ever made on Amazon or eBay. I kept the majority of my games from my youth and if I see another game while at a flea market or thrift store that I want to play or rented once but never got around to purchasing, I'll pick it. I also go to the occasional retro gaming con and swap some titles that I have duplicates of or bought and didn't care for. I still have all of my consoles on display with the cords and controllers close by, so it'll take less than five minutes to have one of my games up and running.

That being said, the glory that is Steam sees me caring less and less about collecting modern games.

Indeed I do! I even keep games that I don't intend to play again, just for nostalgia's sake.

As for digital versions: I ONLY get them when I have no choice because obviously you can't have them past the life of a console. Once my PS4 kicks it and support is no longer available I will lose the indie games I downloaded onto it.

I also hate supporting digital on principle. I think it will ultimately be a nightmare for the consumer, especially in regard to owning movies/tv shows. Although I play exclusively Virtual Console Nintendo games from the NES to N64 years simply because they look better on HD TVs.

I try to stay to my roots of collecting video games. I always try to by the new Zelda game most of all.
