I bought my little brothers playstation 3 about 2 months ago because I was getting bored of my nogames playstation 4.

Most games I played worked no problem. I tried playing Portal 2 and GoW 3 the other day and both wouldn't work and I figured it was just the game.

Today I bought a few $5 games from eb games and all my rages it still freezes. I tried to play both Uncharted 1 and 2, both the games work fine but the cutscenes and audio during the cutscene is really fucked up. Mass Effect 2 worked fine and those are the only ones I've played so far.

I read the thing about holding down the power to reformat HDD or something. I tried, it seemed to have worked a little bit then it went back to fucking up.

Will erasing the HDD completely fix my problems?

I don't know how the fuck Portal 2 would do it, but your ps3 is probably overheating. Try cleaning the sawdust and toenail clippings out and don't put it in a 100 degree room. My xbox 360 slim overheated and froze when I'd play BF3 for like 9 hours straight, but again how the fuck Portal does that is beyond me.

I know but I don't have all that much saved on it, so if it would fix it I would go for it. Portal would start up and then when you're in the room at the beginning it just fucks up non stop and the door won't even open.
Forgot to mention Little Big Planet 2 did this also, game worked fine but the audio was super choppy it was skipping while I was playing kinda.

your dvd drive might be going bad. maybe try a lens cleaner

I don't know, the playstation 3 was made of crappy parts, could be anything.
