In the 1970's the first consoles and personal computers all used the same cpu, the 6502. It was, naturally an incredibly shitty cpu that struggled to even run basic i/o devices like a keyboard and text on a screen. Consoles were created because there wasn't room for games on early computers. As the decades rolled on newer things were added to PCs like hard drives and operating systems that could run more than one program simultaneously and these things made then unstable, buggy and expensive. But eventually PCs stabilized in the mid 2000's. The internet made computers mostly bug free and directX and gog have made most pc games backwards compatible. So really there's no reason to have a console anymore. PCs are objectively better value for money and can run more games than all consoles put together.
