When they launched the first Xbox, they really wanted to the capture the Japanese market because they wanted the Japanese developers to make some games for their console. They felt it was necessary to have the Japanese developers to compete with the Playstation.

Now that is not the case anymore. JRPGs aren't huge system sellers like it was during the Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 era. With how dead the console market is in Japan and America/Europe being the biggest consumers of console gaming, the Japanese developers have basically jumped shit to the western market.
