arthur c clarke is pretty good. i liked the foundation series. foundation was pretty straightforward but i liked the concept. uh...phillip k dick's stuff is good. the problem with most sci fi to me is that any of the good ideas were stolen by tv, movies, and video games, so you've probably heard of them already. also they can be dated, like in foundation they used microfilm and lots of switches. it can take you out of the story.
